A vegetarianism drive was recently held at Tzu Chi Pudu Community Centre. Chang Sew Loon, Vegetarian Cooking Teacher of Tzu Chi Continuing Education Centre, demonstrated the vegetarian cooking, which was greatly enjoyed by many participants.

Aware that vegetarian diet is one of the most effective ways of protecting Planet Earth, Tzu Chi volunteers have been doubling their effort in promoting vegetarianism to the public. A greater public response to the movement will definitely see a greener Earth.

How to cook a simple and nutritious vegetarian meal? This is a common question on many people's minds. For this reason, a vegetarian cooking demonstration was held at the Tzu Chi Pudu Community Centre on March 18, 2012, with attendance by almost 100 participants, comprising Tzu Chi volunteers and members of the public.

During the question and answer session, many queries about ingredients and cooking methods were raised. Being a very experienced cook, Teacher Chang managed to clear their doubts and provide a satisfactory answer to every question.

Chef Chang's vow

Chang Sew Loon loves to cook since young and has been a chef for18 years. In his 18-year experience, he had tasted almost all kinds of food, including elephant trunk, tiger meat and so on.

One day, when he attended a Tzu Chi activity and saw the movie "Crying life", his inert kindness was aroused, and he realized his past wrongdoings in killing animals. It was then that he decided to become a vegetarian chef. With Master Cheng Yen's call for everyone to "Go Vegetarian", Sew Loon also felt the need to promote the campaign.

But he took no action. A year ago, he sustained a lower back injury and had to stop working. He knew his suffering was his karmic retribution as he had killed many lives in the past. As a result, he vowed to promote vegetarianism after recovery.

Sew Loon designed his dishes using easily available ingredients so as to attract more people to become vegetarians.

It is delicious

Chen Jun Yuan, a standard five student, was rather restless throughout the cooking demonstration. But when the food was served, he was enticed and ate three bowls of the yam and peanut rice.

Jun Yuan said his mother seldom cooks vegetables which he loves. As the rice smelt so good, he could not stop himself from eating two extra bowls.

Xu Mei Qin had never cooked an authentic vegetarian meal before as it would involve too much time and effort to prepare the vegetarian soup. Instead, she buys the family meals from the vegetarian food-stalls on the first and fifteenth day of the lunar month.

The cooking demonstration was an eye-opener for her as she has learnt about the various vegetarian seasonings.

It takes the united strength of all to achieve results. The more people learn about the advantages of the vegetarian diet, the easier it would be to promote it; and hopefully saving our ailing Earth will not be an impossible dream.
