Typhoon Haiyan, which made landfall on central Philippines on November 8, 2013, had caused great devastation to the land and claimed thousands of lives. Tzu Chi Kuala Lumpur & Selangor held a fundraising campaign from November 12 to 24, and received RM50,000/- from the Selangor Government.

On December 5, 2013, the Exco member in charge of Welfare and Women's Affairs, Rodziah Ismail, handed a mock cheque of RM100,000/- on behalf of the Selangor Government to three Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) to help distribute aid to victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. Mr. Medardo G. Macaraig from the Embassy of the Philippines in Malaysia was present at the ceremony.

The three NGOs were the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation, which received RM50,000/-, while the Islamic Relied Malaysia and Malaysia relief Agency (MRA) each received RM25,000/-.

Rodziah Ismail said that the decision to choose the three abovementioned NGOs was done after a meeting and discussion was held with them.

She added that all the NGOs have carried out humanitarian missions in a number of places in the Philippines which were hit by the typhoon since last November.

Deputy CEO of Tzu Chi Kuala Lumpur & Selangor, Sio Kee Hong disclosed, "When carrying out relief work, Tzu Chi always ensures that its relief is direct and focused. We deliver the materials and money directly to the hands of the victims. We thank Selangor Government for trusting us with the money and agreeing with our relief methods."

Tzu Chi volunteers screened the news clips of the relief work in progress in the Philippines. The audience members were especially impressed with the "Cash-for-Work Clean-Up Programme" carried out by Tzu Chi in that country.

Tzu Chi volunteers were invited to hold a health talk and environmental protection exhibition at the joint Family's Day of Top Glove, Khind and Setia Groups on October 27, 2013. Selangor's Chief Minister, Tan Sri Dato' Seri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, who was present at the event, was introduced to Tzu Chi's missions and its international relief efforts. Following this event, the Selangor Economic Action Council invited Tzu Chi volunteers to their Council Meeting on November 14 to introduce the Foundation. Impressed by the presentation, the Council later decided to select Tzu Chi as one of the NGOs to help deliver aid to the Filipino victims.
