On the Happy Schooling Scheme Presentation Ceremony held at Tzu Chi Taman Seraya Community Centre, Shameta a/p Mathavan Thevar, a recipient of the Diligence Award, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Tzu Chi for the financial aid and long-lasting companionship. Thanks to the love from society, she gets to enjoy her study life.

Sixteen-year-old Shameta a/p Mathavan Thevar and her younger sister, Kavithiaa, are recipients of the Diligence Award. Shameta is not only studious but also helps her mother with various household chores, from cooking rice to doing laundry. In the weekends, she and her siblings would tag along when their mother goes out for cleaning jobs to ease her load.

Shameta has a keen interest in painting. Her drawings reveal her positive outlook in life. Despite having to lead a very thrifty lifestyle, she does not complain. Instead, she looks forward to becoming a successful person who is able to help others to the best of her ability. She also hopes that more people can practise recycling to make the world a cleaner and more beautiful place.

Hearing her sharing, her mother, Tholasi a/p Krishnan, was gratified. Six years after her husband’s demise, she has regained hope in life, thanks to financial aid from Tzu Chi and emotional support from the volunteers. She revealed that with her meagre income, it was challenging for her to cope with her children’s school fees when new school years commenced, and she could only afford to send one child to tuition classes each year. With the study aid from Tzu Chi, all three of her children can now attend tuition classes and have shown improvement in their studies.
