Primary 6 student, Denise Chong Shao En, performs well in her studies and is active in extra-curricular activities in school as well. Due to her diligence and behaviour, she has been a recipient of Tzu Chi Study & Award Scheme for four consecutive years, which helped ease the burden for her family.

Titi is a small township by the hillside approximately one hour drive from Seremban, Negeri Sembilan.

A tanned and jovial Denise Chong Shao En studies at SJK(C) Chun Yin in Titi. She came from a single parent family and had been living with her grandparents as her mother is working outstation. Her mother would return to Titi during the weekends to be with her, and their relationship has always been close.

A lovely and sensible child

“When I finish a house chore, I will record it in the Tzu Chi self-assessment booklet. I am so grateful to Tzu Chi for conferring me with the Morality Award which has helped in easing my grandma’s burden,” Denise stated.

Recipients of the Tzu Chi Study & Award Scheme were given a self-assessment booklet which functioned as a silent teacher and a reminder to be a good child at all times. With sheer hard work and attentiveness, Denise not only completed all the tasks listed in the booklet but also achieved outstanding results in her studies.

Teacher Huan Lee Lee who kept a close relationship with Denise described her as a well-mannered and intelligent girl who is liked by many teachers. She was happy to see her winning the Morality Award for four consecutive years and has kept encouraging her to excel.

Class teacher Chong Lee Kian had only the good words for Denise: “She is very polite,   responsible and has great initiative. The teachers never have to worry about her.”

Classmate Lee Jin Lan reckoned Denise is a role model for the rest of the students as she is hard-working and diligent in her studies.

An all-rounder

Denise excelled not only academically but also in her extra-curricular activities like quiz competitions, basketball, English choral speaking and so on. She said, “I am trying out various activities because who knows, I may need some of these skills in the future.” She was certainly matured for a girl of 12.

She loves all kind of sports like badminton, basketball and volleyball. She even represented the school in basketball winning the district championship and subsequently finishing second runners-up at the state level competition.

Of course, there were slight setbacks at times. For instance, the team managing only to finish first runner-up in the English choral speaking competition. However, it was a great experience for her as she learnt the importance of teamwork. Ng Yi Jing, her basketball teammate, admired her never-give-up attitude and how she always picked up some lessons from each loss.

Adoption of bamboo bank

During one Tzu Chi activity, Denise brought home a bamboo bank. Although she did not appreciate the real meaning then, she was passionate about saving up. Whenever she dropped in some loose change after school, she would make a wish for world peace.

At the 2015 presentation ceremony of Tzu Chi Study & Awards Scheme, she handed a full bamboo bank to the volunteers as a donation to the charity fund to help the needy. At home, she would also encourage the young kids to do the same so that they could start nourishing seeds of kindness from the early years.

In last two years’ presentation ceremonies, she even performed dances to reciprocate the love shown by Tzu Chi volunteers and donors.

Denise has led an exciting life. She grasps every opportunity to learn and has been a good girl in the eyes of teachers, parents and peers. She aims to pass the Primary 6 public examinations with flying colours.

Her ambition is to be either a doctor or a policewoman. She is currently a prefect in school, and to her, doctors are great at saving people lives and serving humanity. She is highly driven and motivated to achieve better results academically and get one step closer towards realizing her dream.
