On March 2, 2013, a briefing session on the soon-to-be implemented 2013 Tzu Chi Scholarship Awards Scheme was held at Tzu Chi Kota Kinabalu Office. Sixty-five primary and secondary school teachers attended this meeting to know more about the Scheme and its application requirements.

When the Scholarship Awards Scheme was first introduced last year, only 38 out of 296 applicants met the criteria for the awards. It was obvious that the teachers in charge of recommending the candidates did not fully understand the application requirements.

To enable the teachers, who are responsible for recommending applicants for this Scheme, to fully understand the procedures and requirements, Tzu Chi Kota Kinabalu held a briefing at its permises on March 2, 2013.

A better understanding on the Scheme

Besides the Scholarship Awards Scheme, Tzu Chi has also introduced a "Happy Campus Programme" to provide food and transportation aid to students with financial problems. Lim Sat Chu, a Staff of Tzu Chi's Charity Department, said that to-date 5 schools are involved in this programme.

Teacher Hiew Mei Ping from Lok Yuk Menggatal Chinese Primary School is very familair with Tzu Chi as she accompanies her students to Tzu Chi's Study Grant Presentation Ceremony every year.

Teacher Hiew was happy that this briefing had helped her to better understand the purpose of the Scheme and its application criteria. She said, "I believe the new Scholarship Awards Scheme can encourage the applicants to study hard."

Happy Campus Programme

A total of 65 teachers from 51 primary and secondary schools attended the briefing. Many of them showed great interest in the "Happy Campus Programme".

Teacher Cheu Kui Fun from Chong Hwa Chinese Primary School thought it is very kind of Tzu Chi to provide transportation subsidies and scholarships to the needy students because these will really help to alleviate the financial burden of low-income families.

Teacher Mazian Mohd from Pekan Putatan Secondary School thanked Tzu Chi for their efforts in helping needy students. She said she could now better understand the role of the teacher in this Scheme. She was happy to note that Tzu Chi is also providing transportation aid as this would enable the 10% of her students, who could not afford the transportation fees, to attend school.

Due to a prior meeting that day, Teacher Tamina Rasnih turned up after the briefing was over. She made it a point to attend this briefing to gather more details about the Scheme because the Study Grant provided by Tzu Chi since 5 years ago had benefitted many of her students.

The teachers' attendance at this briefing was greatly appreciated because it means more needy students will benefit from the Scheme.
