This year, Tzu Chi Melaka has established a "Scholarship Awards Scheme" in place of the "Study Grant Scheme", which was held for many years. The objective of this new Scheme is to find and highlight the outstanding qualities of the underprivileged students.

All students, who qualified for Tzu Chi Melaka's Scholarship Awards this year, have certain qualities that are worthy of praises.

After several monitoring, 628 successful applicants were invited to the Scholarship Awards Presentation Ceremony held on December 9, 2012, at Melaka Jing-Si Hall. The awards included Filial Piety Award, Morality Award, Excellent Academic Achievement Award, Great Improvement Award, Extra-curricular Award and Full Attendance Award.

With the country's robust economic growth in the last few years, the Malaysian Government has implemented several assistance-schemes for low-income families and students in the past two years. Tzu Chi Melaka then decided to review its Study Grant Scheme (where the targeted applicants were from low-income families); and upon review, the Committee reached a consensus to adopt an Awards Scheme that included looking into each family's financial status, besides the many aspects of the students' performance at school and at home.

School Inspectors and teachers also attended the presentation ceremony. Melaka's Chinese Primary Schools' Inspector, Han Bin Yuan, has high praise for this Scholarship Awards Scheme that focuses on the personality and character development of the children concerned.

Mr Han said, "Although society needs a lot of technical specialists, I think we need more virtuous people in this society. Here I saw encouragement was given to students for their improvement not just their academic results. This way the children will gain confidence."

The effect of praise

Lam Yen Nee, a teacher from Catholic Primary School, found that parents today are placing too much attention on their children's academic performance instead of their moral development. The children love to compare results instead of helping each other.

Tzu Chi's Scholarship Awards Scheme gave her an opportunity to pay more attention to the children recommended for the scheme.

Her school's Standard 2 class monitor, Han Jian Chou, used to be bossy. To help him correct this short-coming, Yen Nee recommended him for the Morality Awards. She found that her tactic worked as Jian Chou has become more aware of his speech and actions.

Another student of Yen Nee, Wu Qi Zhong, was a passive child. Yen Nee shared the Jing-Si Aphorisms in the class to encourage Qi Zhong to help others. With this Scheme, there are more frequent interactions between teacher and student. As a result, Qi Zhong will now discuss his problems with her, besides assisting her in the class.

Another student was disliked by his classmates because he loved to take things without asking for permission. To help him, Qi Zhong volunteered to sit beside him so that he could encourage and help him with his homework.

Qi Zhong's parents are divorced, so he stays with his grandmother. The latter, who accompanied him to the presentation ceremony, said that he is also a good helper at home.

The change in these children has proven to Teacher Yen Nee the good effects of encouragement and praise! Besides this, they have also become more confident.

Booklet serves as a reminder

Extra-curricular Award recipient, Gu Yuan Xiang from Pay Fong High School, is an academic achiever, and an active member of her school's Symphonic Band.

Despite being a truck driver, Yuan Xiang's father hopes to provide his children with higher education. He said, "I don't have higher education but all my children are doing very well in their studies. I thank the teachers and Tzu Chi for their encouragement."

Yuan Xiang has 4 siblings but she is the only one with the chance of studying at Pay Fong (a private school). She said the award is an affirmation of her hard work, and the small booklet has served as a reminder for her to excel. She said, "In the booklet, there is one column about helping out with household chores. Every time, when I wanted to tick the column, I was reminded to help my mother first!"

Mother Cai's three children received the "Full Attendance Award". She said that her 9-year old son, Cai Kai Yu, does very well academically but there is room to improve on morality. She also found the booklet very useful. Kai Yu knows what he must do and pay attention to. As a result of her children's participation in this Scheme, she also had more interactions with her children and their teachers.

I am so blessed

Ten-year old Liang Bao Yu received the Morality Award. After listening to sharing of a "Filial Piety Award" recipient, she hopes that next year she will be a recipient of this award, which she will give as her present to her mother.

Bao Yu's mother, Huang Hui Fang, is an Indonesian Chinese. Despite not being able to speak or read Chinese, she was, nevertheless, deeply touched by the movie screened at the ceremony. She said, "I feel blessed. I have very obedient children, who are self-disciplined and very hardworking."

It is the sincere hope of Tzu Chi volunteers that this scholarship, which carries love and blessing from many people, will serve as an encouragement to these underprivileged students to move on courageously.
