This year, Tzu Chi Kuching will be holding 13 presentation ceremonies to hand out study grants to 1,763 students. On October 20 & 21, 5 presentation ceremonies were held at its Office premises, Tabuan Jaya Secondary School, Chung Hua Serian Primary School and Chung Hua (10 Miles) Primary School.

This year, besides the Study Grant, Tzu Chi Kuching also presented awards for Great Improvement, Virtuous and Filial Piety to the 308 students recommended by their teachers.

For 4 months, Tzu Chi volunteers had been visiting schools and homes, and conducting meetings for grant assessments. Following these, the eagerly anticipated presentation ceremonies would be held.

Respect begets respect

Mr Hussin, a Security Guard at Tabuan Jaya National Secondary School, greeted parents and students with broad smiles, and bowing with his palms together every morning. This brought a feeling of warmth and curiosity to all.

Hussin said, "This was the way I met Tzu Chi volunteers the first time and I felt that respectful feeling. Naturally, I want to emulate and perpetuate the feeling. I am glad to be able to greet people the same way now."

His children were Study Grant recipients last year. From the home visit till the presentation ceremony, he has felt the volunteers' respect and love. He is extremely grateful for Tzu Chi's support during his difficult period. He has since changed jobs and has a steadier income now. He hopes to help others in need when he is capable.

Role models of Great Improvement

Yang Zhi Peng explained that he was influenced by friends and hence disliked studies, leading to poor grades. He failed two subjects in the PMR Examinations.

He admitted that he was not thinking clearly in the past. He was told by his father that he was not making full use of the opportunity to study. His father did not have that opportunity during his time.

Recalling his past ignorance, he felt ashamed. He faced difficulties in Form 4 due to his weak foundation, which was further compounded by his father's demise. Luckily, with financial support and encouragement from friends and teachers, he decided to study hard.

He said, "I felt their love and care which gave me the energy to persist in my studies." He was very surprised with his 5As and 5Bs results for the SPM examinations.

When presented with the Great Improvement Award, Zhi Peng promised that he will continue to work hard; and in the future, repay those who helped him and to help those in need. With tears in her eyes, Zhi Peng's mother also thanked those who supported them during their difficult period.

Li Mei Xin repented for her rebellious behavior and for not studying. Her mother once told her, "Your life and your future are yours to fulfill. If you do not seize the opportunity, you will be like me."

That conversation, which took place many years ago, had awakened her to lead a better life and to repay her parents by making them happy. With her firm determination, her grades improved yearly without tuition. She jumped from the 23rd position at Form 1 to 5th placing in Form 5.

She realized from the Study Grant video that there are many poor students facing a difficult learning path. She feels that this Great Improvement Award is an encouragement for her. She has saved a part of it for her future studies at tertiary level. She is clear that she has to work extra hard in order to fulfill her dream of studying in the university.

Role model of Virtue

Guan Li Li is a self-motivated student, who willingly helps her fellow students and is respectful to her teachers. Lin Cui Fang, a teacher at DPHA Stampin School and a Tzu Chi volunteer, was tasked with the Study Grant application at the school. She gave an elaborate report on Li Li that included her having to take care of the household and her ill mother. She recommended Li Li for the Study Grant and Virtuous Award.

With her successful application, Li Li was very happy as it has eased the family's financial burden. With tears in her eyes, a very thankful Li Li said that her dream is to be a baker. She said, "This is not an ambitious dream but it is a career and I will fight for it."

She came from a single-parent family. Her father left them before she was born. As a result, her mother suffered from prolonged depression for more than 20 years. Even though her father supports them financially on alternate months, it is not sufficient. She had to work during school holidays to support the family.

She recalled a terrible episode when she was in Primary 2. At that time, her mother had a bout of depression and was in a state of confusion. She and her mother were then living on the streets for months, relying on people for support. She was thankful that her uncle found them; and following that, she went to stay with her grandparents while her mother was warded in hospital. Now, her mother requires medications to stabilize her mood swings. She also suffers from high blood pressure and was hospitalized a couple of times. As a filial daughter, she stayed with her mother at the hospital. Despite all these difficulties, she had never missed school.

We have gone through many difficult periods. Now that I am grown up, and my mother's condition has stabilized, I will repay others in need when there is an opportunity. Not used to expressing herself, her mother hugs her daughter.

Role models of filial piety

"Taking care of my grandfather, who is suffering from stroke, is a natural act," said 17-year old Chen Li Zhu, who patiently takes care of her grandfather without complaints.

Second in a family of 5 sisters, Li Zhu stays in Kuching with her grandfather, aunt and cousins while her parents work in Bintulu. She is busy in the day with her studies and at night, she sacrifices her sleep to take care of her grandfather. Despite the difficulties, her filial piety has never wavered. It had, in fact, inspired a teacher to recommend her for the Filial Piety Award.

"Having good moral is being polite, hardworking, honest, brave and kind..." On receipt of the Virtuous Award, Primary 3 Li Jing Yan eloquently explained that she washed dishes, did housework and taught her brother at home; and in school, she helped fellow students with homework and always greeted the teachers.

Jing Yan's father was thankful and proud of her daughter. He said, "She is obedient and a self-starter. We seldom worry about her. She wakes up at 4.30 am to catch the 6 am bus to school. She eats packed lunch prepared by her mother as it is convenient and economical." Her daily routine did not affect her studies as she obtained 6As and 1B for the PMR examinations.

Teacher Chen Shu Xian, who represented SJK Chung Jua No. 3 School, stated that Tzu Chi presented the award with love and caring, regardless of religion and race. She urged students to remember that day's acts of kindness and to help society in the future.

Serian Public Secondary School's Deputy Headmaster, Bei Wei Yan, thanked Tzu Chi volunteers, who had performed home visits to assess each applicant from the lists provided by the school.

The presentation of Study Grant and awards is a perpetuation of love and care. The students are frugal and study hard despite their poor family background. In addition to the Study Grant, the Great Improvement, Virtuous and Filial Piety Awards also allow us to see the inner beauty of the students and their bright future.
