Following the devastating floods that hit Malaysia, Tzu Chi Malaysia and Singapore have mobilized all volunteers to survey the affected areas, distribute relief aid, and hold free clinics since December 26. As of December 29, a total of 2,178 families (some 7,000 people) had benefitted.

At the recent Year-end Blessing Ceremony, Tzu Chi KL & Selangor organized a fundraising campaign to inspire more love and kindness. When volunteers carried around donation boxes on December 29, Wang Xian Qing, an attendee said, “We are blessed with no disaster here, hence will try to help as much as possible.”

These were the worst floods to hit Malaysia in 30 years. During the ceremony, updates were provided to give the audience a better understanding of the relief efforts, and to promote sponsorship of Jing Si Instant Rice. A Tzu Chi volunteer shared, “When disaster strikes, this Jing Si Instant Rice*has proven useful.”

Song Quek Khian, Deputy CEO of Tzu Chi KL & Selangor said, “We are preparing more Jing Si Instant Rice so that the flood victims could have a fresh meal.” Although all Instant Rice had been brought down from shelves for relief distribution, the sponsorship still received an overwhelming response from the public.

Lin Zhen Zhong, an attendee stated, “Jing Si Instant Rice is a good idea, as it is not only for self-consumption but can also help others.” Another attendee, Chen Jun Yu said, “When others are in need, I can reduce my intake and offer it to them. The concept of Jing Si Instant Rice is very thoughtful; it is a creation of love.”

‘Great Love’ from Taiwan

At Jing Si Abode in Hualien, monastics and volunteers were busily manufacturing 850 boxes, close to 10,000 kg, of Instant Rice for delivery to Malaysia by noon, January 1, 2015, together with eco-friendly bowls, utensils, bags and aid. Cartons of Instant Rice were transported to the airport, neatly arranged and clearly tagged with boarding pass, bringing hope to the flood victims in Malaysia.

When assistance was requested from Tzu Chi volunteers in Taiwan, they accepted without demur. Volunteer Lin Yong Quan remarked, “We were notified at 10 am and immediately treasured the opportunity to assist.” Another volunteer Chen Deng Chun said, “I come back every week because my mum is 103 years old this year. I received the phone call asking for help upon arrival at noon today.”

Yang Wen Zhong, an employee of a logistics company, travelled five hours to transport the materials from Hualien to Taoyuan International Airport. He did not feel tired at all and even helped to unload the materials. He got to know Tzu Chi through the 921 Earthquake and has been supporting Tzu Chi since then. “We wanted to offer better discounts on the transportation charges but Master understood our position and was happy with the special price.”

With the “Great Love” from Taiwan, it is hoped that the flood victims can bounce back quickly.

Fulfilment of social responsibility

On December 30, 300 boxes of Instant Rice were transported by Malaysia Airlines to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Cargo Village, free of charge. In the shortest possible time, 100 boxes of Instant Rice were sent by Nippon Express to one of the worst-hit areas, Kota Bharu. Its Sales Manager, Roslan bin Osman stated, “As a transportation company, this is where we could help. Due to bad weather, recent Indonesian airline tragedy and many other factors, we decided to ship the items by road. Besides, we were informed that roads to Kota Bharu are accessible already.”

Tzu Chi first cooperated with Nippon Express when shipping drinking water to Thailand during the widespread flooding in 2011.The company showed its commitment to extend social responsibility again by helping the flood victims in East Coast of Malaysia.

* Jing Si Instant Rice has been developed to provide hot meals during disaster. This instant food product does not require any cooking as it can be prepared with cold water. It is convenient when carrying out international disaster relief work.
