With Mother’s Day fell on the second Sunday of May, Tzu Chi KL & Selangor held a joint celebration for Mother’s Day, Buddha Day and Tzu Chi Day at KL Tzu-Chi Jing Si Hall. A foot bathing session was arranged for children to express their love to their parents – a truly memorable gift indeed.

“When was the last time you washed your parents’ feet? Did you notice their feet have become rough? That’s the sign of aging. Please do a good massage on their feet, make them relax and have a good sleep tonight…” The soft voice of the emcee created a warm atmosphere and touching feeling at the foot bathing area.

The sign language of “Kneeling Lamb” presented by Tzu Chi Teenagers’ Group deeply moved many to tears, including the parents who were seated and the children who were kneeling in front and massaging their parent’s feet.

Do not wait to repay parental kindness

Since the very beginning, from massaging to washing to bowing, Xu Song Ru could not hold back his tears. His mother, Du Su Yin said with a smile, “I am 77 years old but this was the first time my son is washing my feet and hugging me. This has been the best Mother’s Day gift.”

“After primary school, I do not remember hugging my mother in 70 years. If we did not come today, the embrace would still have to wait…” Song Ru stated in a choking voice.

The mother recalled sweetly that when her son was young, he would only sleep after bidding her goodnight. It was there and then that the son realized the profound love of his mother.

“Through this activity, I feel very fortunate that my parents are still around and healthy so that I have the chance to repay their kindness,” a teary-eyed Song Ru remarked.

Chen Wei Xun, an eight-year-old boy was seen bathing his parents’ feet calmly although the emcee had requested the children to end by bowing to their parents. His innocent smile and questions to his parents were very heart-warming.

“Boy, do you feel tired washing your parents’ feet? Are you touched?”

“I do not feel tired. It should be my dad and mum who feel tired having to earn money and do housework. I do not feel bitter at all. I was so touched that I felt like crying,” replied the young Wei Xun. His charming naivety brought a smile to the teary parents.

“Today is Mother’s Day. I want to wish my mum a Happy Mother’s Day, and I want to tell her I love you,” Wei Xun expressed aloud before leaving with his parents joyfully.

Upon recommendation by her elder cousin sister, Cai Mei Zhen brought her mother, Huang Qi Cai to participate in the event. She confessed, “I regretted for being rebellious during my teens and made my mum worried. During the foot bathing, I was filled with remorse for the time spent with her is getting lesser and lesser…”

Being a mother now, Mei Zhen felt the urgency to fulfil her filial duties to her aged mother. She will try to make time for her mother in future.

Say ‘thank you’ loud and clear

Volunteer Siow Yuen Lan accompanied an 83-year-old wheelchair-bound granny, who had arrived with her daughter, Unisuary, and granddaughter, Subashini, throughout.

“The granny is like my mother. Whenever my husband and I go over to her house, she would welcome us warmly. She can’t move around much in recent years and it really pains us to see that,” said Yuen Lan.

The granny has been staying with her daughter but as everyone in the family is busy with work, she is left alone most of the time. Thus, Yuen Lan invited Unisuary (also her colleague) to bring her mother to the event.

Upon reading about the foot bathing on the poster, Unisuary recalled she last washed her mother’s feet when she got married. To the Indians, foot bathing is important hence, she had looked forward to it.

“I never expected Tzu Chi’s foot bathing to be so different. When the song was played, tears already welled up in my eyes even before the foot bathing began.” When Unisuary held her mother’s feet gently for washing, tears started to roll down her cheeks.

“It is a fabulous Mother’s Day, thank you!” Unisuary exclaimed. Although the granny is a person of few words, one could tell she was truly moved. Unisuary also gave Yuen Lan a warm embrace for a different Mother’s Day celebration.

Subashini, who washed her grandmother’s feet for the first time shared, “It was very moving. What a different gift for our mothers! I thank my mum for raising me and putting up with me.” To Subashini, the day was not just a formality but also an act of filial piety from the bottom of her heart.

Every one of us was brought into the world after our mother went through a ten-month pregnancy and labour pains. In bathing the calloused feet of the mothers, the children could really feel the hard toil of their parents in bringing them up. Thus, one must not wait to express their love and gratitude.
