All teachers and students at Melaka Pay Fong High School recently promoted environmental protection at their premises, with assistance from Tzu Chi volunteers. This "Love the Earth, Love the School" movement will be held during assemblies; and Saturday has been designated the school's Environment Day.

"Will 2012 be Doomsday?" Tzu Chi volunteer Lai Chai Boo asked the 2,000 students and teacher of Pay Fong High School during the assembly on February 8, 2012. It marked the beginning of Tzu Chi and Pay Fong's cooperation in implementing the "Love the Earth, Love the School" movement.

During her studies in Taiwan, Li Cai Xia, Chief Teacher of the school's Science Laboratory, visited a Tzu Chi recycling station and was impressed with the volunteers' commitment in promoting environmental protection. She then proposed that this concept be implemented in her school; and her proposal received strong support from the school's Principal, Mr Chong Joon Kin. Li Cai Xia then invited Tzu Chi volunteers to share the philosophy of environmental protection with the students.

In fact, Tzu Chi was invited in early 2003 to promote environmental protection at the school, and that marked the start of their close relationship. At that time, the school's administration was worried that recycling, which requires a lot of manpower, would affect the students' lessons. As such, they limit their recycling to newspaper and waste paper only.

After listening to Tzu Chi volunteer, Lai Chai Boo's sharing on his successful recycling experience at Pay Fong (3) Primary School, Principal Chong is confident that the programme will work. He said: "We want to do it in a more thorough and serious manner in order to cultivate the students' awareness in the 'Love the Earth, Love the School' concept and instill in them the good habit of readily protecting the environment."

Lai Chai Boo proposed to do more than just share the concept of environmental protection with the students and teachers. An Environmental Protection Exhibition was held from March 28-30 prior to their first Recycling Day, March 31.

Environmental protection in the school

Students from each class were led by their class teacher to visit the exhibition, where four Tzu Chi volunteers showed how the recycled PET bottles can be processed into thread, fabrics and final products such as blankets, T-shirts and so on. It was indeed an eye-opener for the students.

Student Chen Ying Yi knew that paper can be recycled, but did not know how it was done. Now, she knows that paper can be divided into coloured, black and white, cardboard and newspapers. She was excited to learn that PET bottles can be converted into threads to make clothes. She said: "Although rare earth can pollute the Earth, we can only protest; but environmental protection can help reduce pollution and contribute to the conservation of the Earth."

Huang Jun Qing, a Junior High School Chinese teacher now realized that "Knowing that plastic bottles can be made into so many things, I will appeal to the students to bring clean unwanted plastic bottles, and also to classify the paper to protect the environment together." Mr Huang and his students have reached a consensus that "Everyone must protect the environment and make the school a better place."

Protect the environment naturally

"The box on the left is for black and white paper. That is colored paper while those in your hand are cardboards."

Despite the downpour, the students, parents and teachers brought along their recyclables to the school on March 31. Tzu Chi volunteers will accompany the parents, teachers and students to collect recyclables.

Led by their teacher, Li Cai Xia, students from the Science Society, brought their accumulated recyclables, while the resources at the entrance and waiting area were quickly classified neatly by the children of four staff, teachers and students.

Yang Meng Jian, a Science teacher, also brought her old newspaper from home. She developed the recycling habit a few years ago after learning about environmental protection. Back in Malacca, she continued with the classification of recyclables before sending them to Tzu Chi. She said, "There is more and more rubbish; and we can start from our surrounding. Environmental protection should be made a habit, then doing it will become natural."

Principal Chong said, "We hope this recycling programme can be sustained and become part of the characteristics of Pay Fong's education." He arrived early to show his concern and also accompany the Tzu Chi volunteers.

Pay Fong has implemented the conservation of energy since last year. By switching on the air conditioner one hour after the start of classes and shutting it half an hour before class dismissal, has helped the school to save a considerable amount on energy bills. Besides this, the school's education also advocates the development of affection, righteousness and good manners. Principal Chong hopes the students can develop the habit of protecting the environment, and be responsible to the Earth. Apart from becoming a good citizen of the Earth, the students should also contribute their best to the school.

While classifying the resources, Lin Hang Yu had this reflection: "Recycling isn't that inconvenient! If we don't protect our environment, more disasters will happen and there will be more disaster victims. Then the Doomsday prediction may come true."

When is Doomsday? It is when everyone feels that environmental protection is the responsibility of others, and had nothing to do with them. Then in reality, the world does not end but the people are already facing their doomsday. Pay Fong's parents, teachers and students are trying to cultivate self-help and the good habit in saving the Earth. They are also planning to hold a Green Food Fair in June this year.
