Tzu Chi volunteer, Tew Suwi Dee hosted a vegetarian dinner on the occasion of his daughter's wedding. He also invited Tzu Chi volunteers to share out Tzu Chi's charitable concepts and good values of vegetarian diet with his guests, making it a memorable and meaningful night.

Guest, Selvarani happily commented, "This is the first time I attended a Chinese vegetarian wedding dinner. It's a little special and the feeling is nice. A good start for the newlyweds, and I would like to wish them all the best!"

On the evening of February 19, 2012, many guests present at Restaurant Cafe De Sky Garden, Old Klang Road, Kuala Lumpur, were offering their blessings to the newlyweds, Tew Xin Ru and Ke Jian Guo. The wedding dinner was hosted by the bride's parents, Tzu Chi volunteer, Tew Suwi Dee and wife.

A Vegetarian dinner is the best form of blessing

All the guests were delighted with the sumptuous vegetarian dishes tastefully prepared with fresh vegetables. To Suwi Dee, this specially prepared vegetarian meal is a form of blessing for his daughter.

"By observing vegetarianism, we help to minimize killings and reduce carbon footprints on Earth; furthermore, it is also good for our health. I would never forget Venerable Master Cheng Yen's reminder that "Time is running out". As a member of this global community, we should observe vegetarianism to prevent Earth from further destruction, besides being compassionate to all. I hope that after this vegetarian dinner, more people will learn to respect sentient beings, thus making this world a harmonious place to live in."

Suwi Dee has been a vegetarian for more than 20 years. Since joining Tzu Chi, and sticking to Venerable Master's great compassionate principles, he has been calling on everyone to save the Earth and be a vegetarian. After realizing many of his non-vegetarian friends are experiencing of ill-health, he is even more determined in carrying on as a vegetarian. He has also influenced his wife and children by inviting them out to savor dishes prepared in a variety of ways in vegetarian restaurants.

"I believe if the non-vegetarians can have their followers, we, as vegetarians, can do the same to encourage others." That is why Suwi Dee has decided to host a vegetarian wedding dinner for his daughter. Besides introducing Tzu Chi to his guests, he also encouraged them to join the Foundation.

As a strong advocator of environmental protection, Suwi Dee has urged all his dinner guests to "use their clapping hands to do recycling". In doing so, one would cherish "acknowledge blessings, appreciate our blessings and cultivating blessings". Even on the morning of the wedding dinner, he was seen doing recycling at a recycling point - showing a typical example of "Waste not a minute in doing good deeds".

Throughout the dinner, the newlyweds were very happy. Mr Ke, the bridegroom who is a non-vegetarian, was complimented by his father-in-law for not objecting to the vegetarian wedding dinner, as he is also concerned about saving lives.

"I'm also a little worried about health issues as a result of eating too much meat. I do acknowledge the benefits of being a vegetarian as my wife and her family members are vegetarians. I will definitely consider and encourage my friends to do the same too!"

It was a splendid banquet

It was a splendid dinner function with guests mingling freely, amidst a peaceful ambience with soft melodious music playing in the background. At every table, there was a Tzu Chi volunteer keeping the guests company.

After a briefing from a Tzu Chi volunteer on the values of vegetarian meals, a guest of honor, Liu Yu Ping, extended full support to the Tzu Chi meatless campaign and agreed to continue to promote this practice. To her, knowing how to cherish blessings (waste not, want not) is a good start in preventing our Earth from further destruction. She said, "I am sure we should not waste by ordering too much food. This is something very basic."

Volunteer Chen Chun Xiu happily expressed: "I'm impressed with Suwi Dee's thoughtfulness. The way he promoted vegetarianism and Tzu Chi was very good. I could see the results too!"

After Chun Xiu's explanation, three families, who shared the same table with her, expressed their support for Tzu Chi and were interested to find out more about the organization. One of them, Deng Hui Mei, said that she has been supporting Tzu Chi, especially in their international disaster efforts. She was glad to see Tzu Chi again and would try to learn more about recycling activities.

Towards the end of the function, all guests sang a popular Chinese song "掌聲響起 (Applause)" in wishing the newly-wed couple a wonderful and happy married life ever after.

Suwi Dee donated all the cash contributions (Angpows) from his guests to Tzu Chi, making this a very meaningful wedding function.

Hopefully, after this vegetarian function, the guests would come to acknowledge the values of vegetarian diet and minimize killings, as this would help save our Earth and reduce occurrences of natural catastrophes as far as possible.
