Knowing that Tzu Chi is actively promoting environmental protection, committee members of Sun Fu Gong Temple, located at Pandamaran, Klang, invited Tzu Chi volunteers to participate in their environmental protection campaign which took place on August 2.

On July 18, 2009, the committee members of Sun Fu Gong Temple visited Tzu Chi Klang to extend an invitation to the volunteers to participate in their environmental protection campaign. Tzu Chi volunteers then invited the visitors to join in the Community Environmental Day activity and environmental promotion reception at Klang Happy Garden Activity Centre that was held the following day.

The temple committee organized an environmental protection awareness campaign on August 2 with the objective of instilling the concept and practice of environmental protection in the community; and to urge everyone to go green by reducing rubbish.

Tzu Chi volunteers in Klang displayed posters on environmental protection and set up a counter to promote Jing Si Publishing's products and Da Ai TV. In addition, they also gave a talk on environmental protection.

Serve others and cultivate blessings simultaneously

Early in the morning, the villagers assembled at Sun Fu Gong Temple, wearing the uniform provided to them by the organizer. After a light workout, they split into groups to go round the neighbourhood to pick up rubbish, as well as, promote environmental protection to the residents.

The unpredictable weather conditions, from very hot to a heavy downpour, did not dampen the spirit of the volunteers. After relocating their set up, they resumed their respective duties.

Mr Yang Chang Hong, Acting Chairman of the temple, explained that they had spent two months planning for the event before advertising it through the newspaper and radio, as well as, through banners and pamphlets.

"I must thank the young people and the cooperation from Tzu Chi for making this maiden environmental protection campaign a success. I really admire the efforts of Tzu Chi volunteers in their promotion of environmental protection." He then signed up as a donating member of Tzu Chi as he felt that blessing does not come by itself. One needs to work for it.

A real life example on caring for the environment

Madam Liu has been a school bus driver for more than ten years. She has been practicing the eco-friendly concept in her lifestyle for some years now. In addition, she promotes this concept to the students who use her bus whenever there is an opportunity.

She had to stop schooling after primary three because her family was very poor. She said the pencil she had was picked up from the trash, and that "People now are generally more affluent and the kids are given whatever they want. As a result, they tend to be more wasteful as they have never learned to be thrifty." She feels rather sad with this trend of behaviour.

She strongly supports Tzu Chi's effort on environmental protection. She believes that "Everyone must do his/her part in protecting the environment. Don't under-estimate the impact of an individual's contribution."

She is very committed to environmental protection. Wherever she goes, and if within her sight, she will pick up the recyclables and donate them. She truly enjoys doing recycling, and it has changed her temperament too.

Madam Liu, who enjoys talking about environmental protection, added, "Just talking without action won't improve the environment. We must do something, influence others and get more people involved in recycling activities." To her, this environmental protection campaign at Sun Fu Gong temple has given her the opportunity to exercise and share her experience on recycling with Tzu Chi volunteers.
