On December 1, 2013, twenty-nine 6-year olds from KL Da Ai Educare Centre attended their graduation at the New Era College Auditorium Hall in Kajang. Through a series of heartwarming programmes, they showed their gratitude to their teachers for their guidance and hard work in the past three years. It is hoped that these children will continue to be filial and grateful to their parents.

At the graduation ceremony, the children performed the episode of "Pregnancy" from the "Sutra of Filial Piety", while the parents performed "Repaying Kindness". The parents felt very grateful as they reflected on the transformation of their children.

Despite having a sore throat, 6-year old Su Zhi Yi managed to play her role as the 'uterus' on stage although she looked exhausted. Her determination was commendable.

Five former students from Da Ai Educare also appeared in "Pregnancy". They helped to pull a red cloth within which was the fetus undergoing different stages of growth with each passing month.

The most senior of them was 10-year old Zhou Hong Kai, and the youngest was 7-year old Liu Yong Ni. They had always wanted to return to Da Ai Kindergarten to volunteer. Hence, when the teacher invited them to perform, they accepted without hesitation. Nine-year old Liu Yong Jing shared that she was lazy when she was in kindergarten, but now that she has grown up, she is helping her mother with housework and taking care of her sister at home.

Respecting lives

Class Representatives, Zhang Han Yang and Wu Xin Tong shared: "Today is our graduation ceremony. It also signifies that we are leaving kindergarten to go to a primary school. We are grateful to our teachers for their hard work over the past 3 years and for teaching us to do good deeds and to be filial."

Following the speech were the Sutra performance of "Pregnancy" and three other performances, "Respecting Lives", "Little Recycling Soldier" and "Give Love".

"Respecting Life" was a story about Zhang Zhi Xuan. In the sharing, her mother, Huang Xiu Wen said: "Zhi Xuan was naughty and ill-mannered before she attended Da Ai Kindergarten. But, after studying at Da Ai Kindergarten, she has become more polite, and has also learnt to help with housework. She was so happy last night that she could not sleep thinking of today's graduation ceremony."

Xiu Wen added, "Once, when we were having meal at a restaurant, Zhi Xuan went to other tables to persuade people to be a vegetarian like her. I felt embarrassed but deep in my heart I was happy as my kid has this good intention." Seeing her child's strong determination to be a vegetarian, Xiu Wen decided to support her despite objections from family members. She told her daughter, "We cannot force people to be vegetarians; we need to learn to respect other people's choice." Hence, Zhi Xuan has also learnt to respect other people's choice.

Xiu Lan's promise

Xiao Xiu Lan, who participated in the sign-language performance of "Repaying Kindness", was deeply moved to see her son, Su Jing Xiang, overcoming his hyper-activity to perform the sign language! She also revealed that she had gained a lot through this Dharma performance.

Xiao Xiu Lan was also grateful for the contributions made by other parents, who had to practise after work; and for the teachers, who stayed back to teach the sign language or to take care of the kids. It was through all their efforts that the performance was a success.

More importantly, there were more interactions between parents and children. Xiao Xiu Lan related that on one occasion her son imitated her movements when she was rehearsing at home. She told her son, "Don't learn what mother is doing, go and practise your segment!" This was one extra opportunity to communicate. To Xiao Xiu Lan, Da Ai Kindergarten is not only teaching the kids, but is also a growing process for the parents.

Xiao Xiu Lan was so happy with Tzu Chi's education that she promised to send her son to Tzu Chi's Parent-Child Bonding Class (for primary students) and Teenagers' Class; and hopefully 15 years later, he would return to the Kindergarten as a Collegiate Youth (Tzu Ching).

Having known about Tzu Chi when she was in her secondary school, another mother, Lin Xiu Lan was reconnected with the Foundation when she sent her second daughter, Rui Ji, to Da Ai Educare.

It was through Da Ai Educare that she developed a deeper understanding of Tzu Chi. She repented that in the past she had frequently travelled overseas for her fashion business, leaving her children to the care of her parents. As a result, she also did not have the time to be with her four daughters. When she was performing "Repaying Kindness", she deeply felt that she must appreciate parental love.

She felt guiltier when her two daughters, who had attended Da Ai Educare, complained to her that the love they got from school was more than the love their mother had given them. When her younger daughter had eye disease, she quickly sold off her business in order to have more time to care for the family. She had also registered her eldest daughter for the Teenagers' Class. This whole family is indeed walking the Tzu Chi path diligently.

Kid's confidence is from mother's praises

This group of graduands, who used to be naughty, has grown up because their parents and teachers have taught them mindfully. The kids' development had not only touched their teachers, but also their parents.

Huang Wei Xuan and his mother, Zheng Wan Ying, also went to stage to share. Wan Ying said, "I am grateful to Master Cheng Yen's Jing-Si Aphorism that 'Parents are the models for kids'. This statement had made me a good person and corrected my bad temper. At the same time, my child's temper has also improved, and he is also more compassionate. Previously, he disliked putting coins into the bamboo bank. But one day, he told me that the money in the two bamboo banks cannot be deposited to the bank as it is to be used to help a lot of people."

Wan Ying also expressed her gratitude to her son's teacher, Chiah Guat Hoo. Through the latter's written advice in the parent-teacher communication book, Wan Ying had learnt to look at her son's good points. She thanked her son for telling her to stop using leather goods as they were made from animal skins.

Wan Ying has also learnt to be respectful and to feel blessed. She respects and appreciates her children's interests, and has turned complaints into praises. All these were inspired by the core principle of Tzu Chi's teaching.

Great Love was the bridge and Wisdom, the wall. A good heart can bring hope. We hope the children can cultivate their compassionate heart, be a Bodhisattva seed and live life to the fullest.
