Four educational volunteers - Li Mei Jin, Su Yue Ju, You Zi Ping and Xu Bi Zhi - were in Malaysia recently. On June 15, 2013, they shared the "Jing-Si Aphorism Teaching Method" with Principals and teachers of On Pong, Chung Hwa, San Yuk Rawang and Chin Woo Chinese Primary Schools.

The movie "Front of the Class" was used at the start of the three talks. It featured Brad Cohen, a Tourette syndrome sufferer who became a teacher after being motivated by his Principal. He said that every student is special and needs the opportunity to develop his/her talent.

A teacher can greatly influence his/her students. Retired teacher, Li Mei Jin shared that she had always been approached by her former students, who told her that they have not forgotten her advice and had benefitted greatly from it.

Every child is special

Sharing sessions with Li Jin Mei, Su Yue Ju, You Zi Ping and Xu Bi Zhu were held at On Pong, San Yuk Rawang and Chin Woo Chinese Primary Schools on June 15, 2013, from 8 am to 12 pm.

The session held at On Pong Chinese Primary School was jointly organized by On Pong and Chung Hwa Chinese Primary School, with Li Mei Jin as the main speaker.

Teacher Mei Jin explained that the "Jing-Si Aphorism Teaching Method" provides teachers with methods and resources to create a conducive learning environment for the children and guide them onto the correct path. Therefore, please do not look at Jing-Si aphorisms from a religious point of view.

Teacher Mei Jin added, "Everyone comes from a family with different background and each has their own unique talent. Our heart decides our attitude. If students do not perform, we get angry. We should, however, look at it from a different angle and always have an encouraging word for them." She also shared videos on true stories to convince the teachers that love and encouragement are best 'nutrients' for the children.

With more than 30 years of teaching experience, former Headmistress, Su Yue Ju resigned from her teaching post to become a fulltime Tzu Chi volunteer to promote Tzu Chi's educational concepts. At San Yuk Rawang Chinese Primary School, she shared that teachers have an important role to play to create a peaceful society. Like a farmer, a teacher needs to nurture students with care and love.

She said, "I love every student in my class and they are like my children. A teacher needs to use his/her wisdom and passion when teaching their students."

Teachers have to be mindful with their speech

At Chin Woo, Teacher You Zi Ping shared that a teacher not only teaches subjects based on books but also needs to imbibe students with moral values. Jing-Si Aphorism Teaching Method utilises the spirit of great love in educating students.

Students, teachers and parents play important roles in education. These three parties need to have good cooperation in order to nurture good students. She cited an example: A student was disappointed with his parents and decided to leave home. The teacher allowed the student to stay in her house and taught him Jing-Si aphorisms to change his attitude.

Another educational volunteer, Xu Bi Zhu learnt about Jing-Si aphorisms from her 11 years' involvement in the Great Love Mother programme. She said, "We need to deal with children in a rational way. We need to provide opportunities for them to learn and develop their talents."

Bi Zhu added, "Parents are the role models for children. Hence, they should lead by example. It is unavoidable that children will make mistakes, but parents need to guide them to go through the learning process, as well as train them to be confident and responsible."

"What comes to your mind when I say coffee beans?"
"Coffee gives us energy," someone answered.
Bi Zhu said, "A cup of coffee will give you energy because coffee beans have been processed. Same with humans, as everyone needs to go through a learning process."

When dealing with children, one needs to remember that one cannot be stubborn, cannot judge before knowing the truth, do not make hasty decisions, and do not just focus on oneself.

To deal with children, we need to always provide them with support, guidance, motivation, as well as encourage them to get involved in problem solving, and to always be responsible and confident. More importantly, we must be able to communicate with them.

Use wisdom in teaching

Tzu Chi volunteers also presented a sign language performance of the theme song from Da Ai drama, "I Love Mei Jin" and the audience loved it.

Teacher Mei Jin revealed, "The lyrics of the song tell the story of my students. I feel touched when I listen to this song each time." She is glad to have learnt the Jing-Si Aphorism Teaching Method, which has changed the way she teaches.

Teacher Mei Jin also said, "Besides teaching, a teacher also needs to work together with parents in enhancing their wisdom as we are their role models." She further emphasized that a teacher needs to be patient as it is unavoidable that students will make mistakes."

Teachers who participated in the talk did learn a lot from Tzu Chi's educational volunteers. However, they felt that more time should be allocated for the talk.

Use the soft approach in teaching

Principal of San Yuk Rawang said, "I fully agree to using Jing-Si Aphorism Teaching Method. I have used other materials before, like 'Di Zhi Gui' (Standards for being a good student and child), but was unsuccessful. However, it still depend on the efforts and initiative from teachers. I hope the plan will be implemented within 3 years."

On Pong's contact person, Teacher Lin Zi Jing said, "I am pleased with the great efforts made by Tzu Chi volunteers in organizing the talk. They provided detailed information even though it was only through a phone conversation."

Lin Zi Jing is an admirer of Teacher Mei Jin. She said, "Today's talk has helped me to rediscover my passion in teaching. After teaching for more than 10 years, my passion was slowing wearing out."

Lin Xiu Yu, Principal of Chung Hwa and member of Tzu Chi Teachers' Association said, "A teacher has great responsibility in the educational industry. Teaching will be boring if it is treated as an occupation only. We need to change our attitude before we can change others."

In his welcoming speech, Principal of On Pong, Chen Run Qiang said, "I hope the Jing-Si Aphorism Teaching Method will help the teachers to enhance their quality of education." He encouraged teachers to continue to be passionate in teaching. He was also very impressed with the efforts made by Tzu Chi volunteers in organizing the talk.

Teacher Zheng Yu Jing from Chin Woo said, "Jing-Si Aphorism Teaching Method will help to enhance the usual teaching method. It makes teaching more lively."

Huang Ya Xia, a retired teacher from Chin Woo said, "I am glad to learn about Jing-Si Aphorism Teaching Method as it motivates me to continue on the journey of education. Jing-Si aphorisms can be used as part of the teaching materials which will enhance the wisdom of students."

Senior Assistant of Chung Hwa, Yang Wei Wei said, "In the era of information explosion, students are able to obtain information from various channels, and this makes them arrogant. I think sharing Jing-Si aphorisms in our lessons will certainly help the students in their personal development. I also hope that all teachers could use the soft approach when dealing with their students."

Through her participation in a similar talk last year, Principal of Chin Woo, Li Jin Mei, learnt about Tzu Chi and has great respect for Master Cheng Yen. Thus this time, she invited Tzu Chi's educational team from Taiwan to her school. She encouraged teachers to use a better teaching method, like Jing-Si Aphorism Teaching Method, in educating students.
