On May 17, 2013, a group of 60 Tzu Chi Collegiate Youth members went to the Studhuys (Red House) and Jonker Street to promote environmental protection, with the hope of awakening the public's awareness on this very important issue related to our Earth's future.

To attract the attention of the tourists patronizing the famous Jonker Street, the participating Collegiate Youth members shouted slogans that highlighted the issue of global warming and the need to reduce rubbish.

On May 17, 2013, 60 undergraduates from Multimedia University and Technical University of Malaysia, Melaka, went to the tourist spots in historical Melaka to appeal to members of the public to take action in protecting the environment.

The creative Collegiate Youth prepared a poster that displayed a picture of a polluted environment on one side and another picture of a clean environment on the other. They then cut the poster into small card-like pieces like a puzzle. Those interested in supporting the campaign were asked to flip a card on the clean environment side. When all the cards were flipped, a picture of a clean environment appeared.

Initially, everyone was a little shy to approach people. Xiong Shi Xian said, "I am alright with the job of picking up rubbish but not talking to people!" However, after shouting the slogans together, some members of the public took the initiative to show their support to the campaign. On seeing this, Shi Xian put his shyness aside and started talking to people.

Protecting the environment is the Collegiate Youth's mission

At the "Give Me 5 - Seize the Day and Save the Earth" activity on March 23, 2013, the '5Rs' (reduce water usage, reduce electricity usage, reduce gasoline usage, reduce time wastage and reduce unnecessary expenditure) was promoted to the public at A'Famosa, another famous tourist spot in Melaka. Collegiate Youth, Zhang Ting Huan participated in this event.

Ting Huan said, "Many are aware of the need to protect the environment, but few really put it into action. As Collegiate Youth members are of the younger generation, it is their responsibility to protect the environment." Ting Huan realized that people are more willing to listen to them and hopefully after they have pledged their support, they will truly put it into practice.

Huang Ai Xin, another participant of March 23 activity said, "Recycling is a simple job. Everyone can do it. Let's make our Earth a better place."

Teamwork is needed

This was Mohd Fitri's first participation at a Collegiate Youth activity. Despite not being able to read or speak Chinese, he was seen actively promoting the concept of environmental protection to members of the public. He also helped to pick up rubbish on the streets after the activity. He revealed that when he bent down to pick up rubbish, he realized the hardship of the cleaners and repented for littering in the past. He indicated that he would encourage his friends to protect the environment.

Mr Jeythevan from Kuala Lumpur was full of praises for these young people. He said, "Environmental protection is very important. This activity reminds us to stop polluting our environment and purify our mind and soul."

When Chen Chang Wei and his two sons took a stroll at Jonker Street that day, his two boys did not litter their rubbish on the street; and it made Chen happy. He attributed this to the fine example set by the Collegiate Youth members.

To quote Charles Dickens: "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness..." The best, the worst, wisdom or foolishness depend on our thoughts. If we all realize the urgency to love and care for the environment, we can make changes to the world.
