In September 2010, Liu Chun Yan, Principal of Keong Hoe Primary School, implemented "Jing-Si Aphorisms" in her school. She also changed the monotonous school bell ring tone to Jing-Si aphorism ring tone. Master Cheng Yen's wise words have since had a positive influence on the students and teachers.

Seeing the good effects of Jing-Si aphorisms in her school, Principal Liu Chun Yan took the initiative to invite Tzu Chi Teachers' Association and volunteers to organise a "Jing-Si Aphorism Teaching Method" seminar in her school. This is to train teachers from other schools to use the Jing-Si method and experience its positive effects.

A "Jing-Si" Project in developing character

The seminar was organized on April 13, 2013, with Yaw Ah Moi, Ch'ng Swee Peng and Zeng Jing Ci, who are all from Tzu Chi KL and Selangor's Teachers' Association, as the main speakers. They had successfully touched the hearts of 115 teachers from 9 schools and kindergartens.

Having implemented Jing-Si aphorisms in her school for the past two years, Principal Liu had this to share: "Jing-Si aphorisms are easy to understand. From replacing the school bell with Jing-Si aphorisms ring tone and sharing aphorisms at the weekly assembly on Monday, I have witnessed the growth and changes in students." She strongly believes that every child is teachable and it is the teachers' responsibility to find the right way to reach them.

Participants were also shown a video clip of a segment from Da Ai Drama Series, "春風伴我行", that portrays the story of a member of Teachers' Association and Tzu Chi volunteer, Fang Mei Lun, a stern and serious teacher. During her own daughter's rebellious teenage years, she was introduced to Jing-Si aphorisms and later joined the Teachers' Association of Tzu Chi. It was the aphorisms that helped both her and her daughter through the difficult times. And it was also the Jing-Si aphorisms that made her a more caring teacher and re-ignited her passion of being a teacher once again.

Deng Shu Ying, Principal of Oasis Education Centre, was moved to tears by the story. This was her second time attending a seminar on Jing-Si aphorisms. Five teachers from her Centre were also present, and their aim was to explore and get tips from the Jing-Si teachings. Principal Deng had mixed feelings about being a teacher as she was having problems in her Centre. However, after reading a book by Taiwanese Teacher, Ni Mei Ying, she was galvanized. This talk had also given her a renewed sense of optimism and hope again.

Principal Deng said, "To be a teacher was my ambition from young. But I get very upset when faced with children who do not behave themselves. I just don't know what to do with them. But then, as teachers, we should constantly reflect and look for better teaching methods. I have plenty of ideas after watching this video and cannot wait to implement them."

Besides promoting Jing-Si Aphorism Teaching Method, Principal Deng hopes to invite Teacher Ni Mei Ying from Taiwan to exchange ideas on how to create a conducive environment for the teaching of humanities. She hopes to inculcate in her students, as well as, students from other pre-schools, a zest for learning so that they will develop positive attributes in their life later on.

Dialogues and guidance

A young teacher, Huang, who has six years of experience in pre-school education said, "I totally respect Tzu Chi volunteers' kindness and friendliness. I am so inspired after watching the video and hearing the sharing by Teacher Yaw Ah Moi."

"We all want to be good teachers but sometimes we fail and we ask ourselves 'Why?' And when we can't find the answer, we are frustrated. Children are like a sheet of white paper. It all depends on how and what we want to fill it with. Thus, I totally agree with Principal Yaw that we should touch the lives of these children with good thoughts and "Jing-Si aphorisms" seems to be an effective method. So I definitely want to try it out," said Teacher Huang.

Teacher Zeng Jing Ci, who is currently teaching in Kuen Cheng School, incorporates Jing-Si aphorisms into the subject she teaches. Her flexible and interesting methods of teaching had successfully touched and changed the learning attitude of her students; and she does not believe in spoon-feeding her students.

She gave examples on how to use Jing-Si aphorisms in class and encouraged her fellow teachers to teach the children how to learn from events and happenings in their daily life. It is through life's daily lessons that they become wise. She also shared: "We shouldn't deprive children of their play and laughter as it is a manifestation of their innocence; it is their second nature. It is only we, adults, who try to suppress our feelings and emotions. So we teachers must find a way to reach each and every child so that they can benefit from the lessons both in and outside the classroom."

Good deeds created by just one phone call

Hong Quee Wah, Coordinator of the event, was delighted to see that many teachers were very touched. Quee Wah, Principal of a kindergarten, did not mind having to attend numerous meetings and discussions, to coordinate the event, as long as the teaching of Jing-Si aphorisms can be introduced into schools in Klang. With this good thought in mind, she and her team managed to overcome all the problems and make the event a success.

"Today's activity was made following a phone call from Principal Liu asking for Tzu Chi's assistance in organizing the seminar," recalled Quee Wah, as she described the excellent affinity of this event during last year's Graduation Ceremony in Keong Hoe. The ceremony apparently touched many teachers; thus, the reason for Principal Liu to want to spread the teaching of Jing-Si aphorisms in more schools. It is hoped that with this affinity, more teachers would respond or participate in activities organized by Tzu Chi Teachers' Association.

"Jing-Si aphorisms" has transcended language and race to cultivate love and good thoughts. It was cited as a high quality teaching material to nurture a student's mind and character. To quote Master Cheng Yen: "Politeness should be taught and morals should be educated." Hopefully after this seminar, the "Jing-Si Aphorism Teaching Method" would be used in all the schools in Klang.
