Tzu Chi KL & Selangor's Collegiate Youth will be staging "The Sutra of Filial Piety" performance on October 13, 2013. On April 3, a total of 347 students from 19 universities and colleges attended the briefing held at the Twelfth Residential College (Raja Dr Nazrin Shah Residential College) of University of Malaya. It is hoped that more tertiary students will join as assistants or performers.

On March 30, 2013, a grand performance of "The Sutra of Filial Piety" was staged in Hualien. Tzu Chi KL & Selangor's Collegiate Youth team also decided to stage a similar performance in Malaysia. It will be presented through music and sign language to disseminate the message of filial piety to the performers and audience.

Malaysian singer and ambassador for this performance, Yi Jet Qi, performed 3 songs at the briefing. Besides encouraging the students to participate as assistants or performers, he also advised them to be filial to their parents.

Appreciate people around you

Yi Jet Qi shared his sad experience that when his father passed away, he only managed to get a flight back from Taipei 48 hours later. He felt frustrated as he was very close to his father even though they spent very little time together. From this incident, he has learnt to appreciate people around him.

He said, "I am sure all of you have the same objective, which is, to earn lots of money so that your parents will have a comfortable life. But all they care about is your companionship during their birthdays or festive seasons and so on.

He added, "It is difficult for parents to express their love to their children." After his father's demise, he learnt to hug his mother to show his care and love for her."

Always remember your parents' kindness

The lyrics of the song, "Children's Wrongdoings", which described the feeling of being parents, touched the audience.

Shen Zhi Song from New Era College said, "The most impressive scene was the heartbreaking emotions felt by parents when their children broke the law and were imprisoned."

Ma Hong Lian, a student from China currently studying at Lim Kok Weng University of Creative Technology, was also touched by the song, "Children's Wrongdoings". She revealed that she had once ignored her parents' advice but had since regretted and changed her attitude.

Expressing love to parents

The promotional video of "The Sutra of Filial Piety" caught everyone's attention at the briefing. Using her mobile phone, Liu Li Zheng from Tunku Abdul Rahman University (UTAR), immediately recorded the video to share with her friends. She also decided to participate in the performance and will be encouraging her friends to do the same.

Li Zheng felt strongly that the performance will touch the audience and that it is a must for her to share the good things with her friends. She also felt that the younger generation should not focus entirely on studies and entertainment, but should also learn to appreciate people around them.

Zeng Xiang Yi liked the performance and decided to be part of it. At the briefing, he realised that it was not just about the performance, but more importantly, it was about filial piety. He hopes his parents will attend the event, so that he can express his love to them through the performance.

A filial child is considerate

Zheng Xiao Wen, a Sabahan studying at the New Era College, is happy with the guidance and companionship provided by Tzu Chi's Collegiate Youth members and their seniors. Prior to joining the Collegiate Youth, she was a member of Tzu Chi's Teenager's Group. As such, she understands the need to always be filial to one's parents. She will also take part in the performance, as well as, join the door-to-door promotional campaign.

Even though she had only left home for a few weeks, she has understood the need to always be filial to her parents. She always keeps her parents informed about her outdoor activities to allay their worries. She also hopes to have a better understanding about filial piety through this performance.

"The Sutra of Filial Piety" performance will be staged on October 13, 2013, at PGRM Building. It is hoped that 500 tertiary students could be recruited to participate in the event. Tzu Chi's Collegiate Youth Team will continue to promote the concept of filial piety in schools.
