“I do not wish to contribute money only. I want to serve humanity personally.” These were the thoughts imprinted on Chan Choon Bim’s mind upon encountering Tzu Chi in 1995 when he was still an undergraduate. When he crossed path again with the Foundation in 2011, he happily immersed himself in various activities and even assumed the leadership role within the recycling mission.

Chan Choon Bim is passionate about giving back to society. On Tzu Chi monthly Recycling Day, the recycling point at Chinese Taipei School, Bukit Rimau was packed with people from all walks of life, busily sorting out the recyclables. Choon Bim, a recycling cadre, was seen chatting with the volunteers or inviting members of the public to Tzu Chi events.

Choon Bim has worked at Linde Group for 17 years, initially in North Malaysia and now at the HQ in KL. He was with the Production Department then before moving to the Safety, Health, Environment and Quality Department.

Following the encouragement from his supervisor who is a Tzu Chi volunteer, Choon Bim began to get active in Tzu Chi again. He would set aside time from his hectic schedule to attend meetings on recycling, exchange views with others and seek to raise the recycling mission to another level.

He has also participated in home visits. By witnessing the poor and the sick, he discovered how blessed he is with his healthy body and happy family and hence learnt the need to reach out to other suffering beings. Knowing how his parents had brought himself and the siblings up in a hard way, he knew he must not take good times for granted. Realizing the Karmic Law of Cause and Effect, he treasures every single opportunity to contribute.

What love truly means

With so much work on his plate, he does feel tired physically but yet spirited mentally. Complaints from his wife about him spending less time with family would often ring in his ears, which made him pondered, “Am I doing the right things?”

He met his wife Lai Bao Li at Tzu Chi events while in North Malaysia. Their eldest son was born in 2006, followed by their daughter five years later. His wife’s reminder raised doubts in him, “How am I to juggle between work, family and Tzu Chi?”

With no clear answers and the fear of losing what he has, he was hesitant about continuing with Tzu Chi missions and even thought of delaying his certification as a Tzu Chi Commissioner. He then shared his struggle with his wife, who was once an active Tzu Chi Youth.

Understanding his husband’s passion in Tzu Chi’s work, Bao Li suggested Choon Bim to allocate his time accordingly as their children were still young. With his wife’s support, Choon Bim was able to make up his mind.

Unleash one’s potential

From then on, he started to partake in Tzu Chi activities with his family. The adjustment and open communication has enabled him to spend more quality time with the family, thereby lifting his spirit and confidence.

He expressed, “This is a good start. I will interact more with my family and hopefully I will get their support all the way. I am hoping to inspire my parents, siblings and relatives into Tzu Chi too!” His strong determination towards Tzu Chi is clearly evident in his words.

During his participation in Tzu Chi over the years, Choon Bim felt he has gained much be it his thoughts, behaviour or spirituality. He learnt to be at ease with life’s circumstances; he has also learnt to be less calculative and become more patient.

As life is full of uncertainties, he learnt not to be too attached. To him, the ability to adapt accordingly and tune one’s mindset is key in dealing with people and matters effectively. Whether at work or in Tzu Chi, Choon Bim is always willing to accept responsibilities whenever they are assigned to him.

Realizing that one has unlimited potential, he marches on in life courageously and hopes to spread love and kindness around.
