Muar District's annual Mid-Autumn Carnival was held on September 29, 2012. Tzu Chi Muar promoted recycling, Jing-Si Publications' products and vegetarianism. The volunteers' vegetarian "otak-otak”, fried noodles and so on, attracted an overwhelming support.

To celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, the Chinese Youth Association (made up of 29 Chinese clan associations) held a carnival at Muar Chung Hwa High School. This year, it was Muar Hokkien Association Youth's turn to be the organizer.

Tzu Chi Muar was also invited to participate in the 13th Mid-Autumn Carnival, which took place on September 29, 2012. Besides setting up display boards to promote environmental protection and a counter for Jing-Si Publications' books, Tzu Chi also set up recycling stations at the venue.

Spread vegetarianism to more people

At this Carnival, Tzu Chi Muar also set up a stall for the first time to promote vegetarian food.

Volunteers in charge of the food-stall, Ng Quee Hia, Weng Shu Yun and Yan Mei Yu, held several meetings to finalize the menu. They presented in vegetarian-style Muar's specialties like "otak-otak”, fried noodles, pocket bread, healthy rice, salad, cucumber drink, vegetarian baked buns, sandwiches, flour vermicelli cakes, steamed sponge cakes and curry puffs! Most of the ingredients were sponsored by volunteers and suppliers with a wish that more people would get to sample the vegetarian food.

Although it was just a small stall, 30 volunteers were mobilized to assume roles like chefs, cashiers, waiters, vegetarianism promoters and so on. In their effort to promote environmental protection, no polystyrene food containers and disposable cutlery were used. Every patron was also given a paper roll containing a Jing-Si Aphorism to reflect upon.

Vegetarian dishes can be delicious

Chen Ting Ting, sister-in-law of Tzu Chi volunteer, Weng Shu Yun said she was annoyed when encouraged by the latter to go vegetarian. However, after sampling the vegetarian food prepared by Shu Yun, she started to reduce her family's meat intake, hoping that they will soon become full vegetarians.

Vegetarian restaurant owner, Mr Feng Chuan Ji and family turned to vegetarianism because of his two elder children's health problems. His 3rd child, a born vegetarian, is very healthy and has a good temper. Aware of the benefits of a vegetarian diet, he decided to open a vegetarian restaurant to promote this healthy diet to more people. As Tzu Chi was doing the same thing at this charity sale, he happily gave his full support with a sincere hope that eventually every family will be vegetarian.

Go vegetarian for our Earth

New volunteer, Zeng Zi Lin, became a vegetarian after seeing gruesome pictures of the Indonesia riot in 1998. She found that she has become healthier after going vegetarian. Later, her husband also became a vegetarian.

Chen Jia Tian, a member of the Organizing Committee, fully supported Tzu Chi's vegetarianism promotion activity. He thought it was a breakthrough.

Student Huang Wei Sheng, who was helping out at the recycling station, said as his mother is a vegetarian, he has also been eating vegetables often over the past three years.

Besides eating more vegetables, Wei Sheng carries his own food containers when packing food outside and he also reuses paper.

In this auspicious Mid-Autumn Festival celebration, Tzu Chi volunteers sincerely hope that everyone has realized that it is their responsibility to protect the Earth.
