Dr Hew's Talk on Coronary Artery Disease

Tzu Chi Melaka held a public health talk at Merlimau Chinese Primary School on June 14, 2013. The talk, delivered by Dr Hew Chee Chin, Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon - Paediatrics & Adults, was attended by approximately 90 people.

Prior to the talk on "Understanding Coronary Artery Disease and Prevention", there was a screening of a movie entitled, "Tzu Chi 2012 in Review".

Tzu Chi volunteer, Teng Swee Ueng said that many people in Merlimau are aware that Tzu Chi is active in recycling work. However, there was a need to make them understand that Tzu Chi volunteers also care for everyone's well-being. For this reason, a free health screening held on September 1, 2012, advocated the importance of health checks. On June 14, 2013, a talk was organized specially for those attendees found to have hypertension, high blood sugar or high cholesterol. This was to make them understand the health problems they may encounter and their root-causes.

Prevention is the best action

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common type of heart disease and the cause of heart attacks. The disease, which is the leading cause of death worldwide, is caused by plaque building up along the inner walls of the arteries of the heart, thereby narrowing the arteries and restricting blood flow to the heart. Dr. Hew said although this disease can be treated, it is better to prevent it. She encouraged all to go for health checks regularly and practise a healthy lifestyle, including exercising daily.

Dr. Hew also explained that "Coronary heart disease is closely related to the degree of coronary atherosclerosis. Factors inducing this disease include hypertension, diabetes and other diseases, as well as, obesity. Smokers are also facing a higher risk of contracting this disease. As such, they are advised to pay more attention to their health."

Understand your health condition

Madam Liao Ying Xiang's husband passed away last year from complications due to diabetes, which he did not seek treatment for earlier. With her husband's demise, Madam Liao was left to provide for her family of four. One day last year, she fainted while doing household chores at home and was diagnosed with heart disease.

Madam Liao informed, "I have all the symptoms described by the doctor, like shortness of breath, dizziness, fatigue and so on. I must do follow-up health checks as advised by the doctor. I must also be more alert of my condition and take a rest whenever I don't feel well."

During the Q & A session, Dr. Hew answered many queries and encouraged those, who have heart disease, to seek treatment from specialists.

Dr. Hew concluded that it is not very difficult to have good health as long as one maintains a healthy lifestyle.
